I started carving in 1988 with just a pocket knife and a
couple of gouges. My first carvings were of caricature dogs
and very crude. Since then, I graduated to a power tool style
of carving and carve realistic animals, caricature cowboys,
Santas and cotton wood bark. I still, however, use knives
and gouges a lot.
After carving for a year
or two, I began entering local art & craft shows and
won several first and second place ribbons.
I later started attending classes in
Montgomery, Alabama at the Southeastern Woodcarving School.
It was there that I met Jim Wilsford, one of the instructors
at the school, and invited him to Florida to teach classes
to our small carving group. He was and still remains instrumental
in my carving success. |
Since
then I have entered several competitions throughout Florida
and the Southeast and have won numerous first and second
place Awards. Those include First
Place and Second Place Ribbons in Realistic Animals at the
Florida State Fair and the Fort Myers carving show. I have
also had the honor of serving as a judge at the Florida State
Fair.
I am now a regular instructor teaching
realistic animal carving at the Southeastern Woodcarving
School each July in Montgomery, Alabama. I also teach classes
to winter residents as well as local carvers here in Sebring,
Florida. I strongly believe that my thirty-three years
of public school teaching experience helps me to teach carvers
in a way that fosters success for each student.
I started Sunshine Woodcarving Supply
about 12 years ago. Along with my wife Debbie, we attend
several of the carving shows here in Florida as a wood carving
tool vendor. As our business has continued to grow, it now
is a full time business .Since my retirement as a public
school teacher for 33 years, I now will be able to devote
all of my time to the business. We hope you find our web
site full of carving supplies and ideas that will aid you
with your carving. |
